Some people may get lucky and find some language exchange partners for the long term but this is rare.  Many users, encounter language partners who are unresponsive, disinterested, only looking for casual conversations or end up being ghosted, which at the end of the day be quite frustrating and leads to you wasting a lot of valuable language learning time.

Additionally, some users may be more focused on their own language learning goals, neglecting to support their partners’ needs, thus creating an imbalance in the exchange (which is ideally 50/50). Time zone differences and busy schedules can further exacerbate the problem, leading to sporadic communication that fails to provide the regular practice necessary for language improvement. Sadly I don’t see too many solutions that we can do as a user, it’s really up to the apps to implement better measures that will limit the number of users using these apps as dating apps. As a female, you’re best bet is to not use a profile picture of yourself, but of an animal or something else. The second would be sadly to make the block feature your best friend and be prepared to block these guys.

Regrettably, discrimination is a prevalent issue that many individuals encounter. It appears that originating from specific countries can result in disadvantages, ultimately making it challenging for those affected to connect with others willing to engage in conversation. This situation is often exacerbated by instances of sexual harassment.  Racial discrimination on language exchange apps can be a significant concern and a barrier for some users seeking to improve their language skills. In these cases, individuals may experience biased behaviour or be treated unfairly based on their race or ethnicity. This can manifest in various ways, such as:

• Profile rejections: Some users may reject or ignore requests from individuals of specific racial and ethnic backgrounds or from certain countries, limiting opportunities for genuine language exchange and meaningful connections.
• Stereotyping: Users may encounter others who make assumptions about their language skills, interests, or personalities based on racial or ethnic stereotypes. For example, some people might exclude certain users who may be fluent but are from a different racial or ethnic background which ends up limiting learning opportunities for those affected users.

However, these platforms also come with their fair share of challenges, such as inconsistency in interactions, misuse for dating purposes, and discrimination.
